Q & A with Kristina Curry

by J. Michael Blackston

We are thrilled to have Kristina Curry, M.A. as the newest member of our counseling team. She is a licensed mental health counselor and is accepting new clients at the Winter Springs location. Please call (407) 405-7677 to schedule an appointment.

Michael: Why did you decide to become a counselor?

Kristina: When I was in college, I had a few people in my life who started to ask me hard questions and take me to difficult places in my story. Through this process, I began to realize how experiences in my life have impacted and shaped me. After I graduated college, I began meeting with a professional counselor and continued to share my story, grieve the hard places, and fight for hope. Through both professional counseling and healthy friendships, I realized how impactful and healing it can be to vulnerably share with others. Through these experiences I decided I wanted to walk alongside others in their stories and to help them experience healing, joy, and hope in the midst of brokenness.

M: Tell me about your experience before joining Redeemer Counseling.

K: After I graduated from graduate school, I began working with a counseling center associated with a church in Mobile, Alabama. During that time, I also worked as the Women’s Director for a Christian medical school ministry. This job allowed me to use my counseling skills in a different atmosphere as I had the privilege of walking alongside medical school students during a busy and crazy time in their lives.

After three years in Mobile, I moved with my new husband to Orlando. Since living in Orlando, I have worked as a Motivational Coach for at-risk students at a middle school and as a therapist at an inpatient addictions rehabilitation center. The variety of work opportunities has allowed me to meet with many different people and has challenged me to grow in different areas of counseling.

M: What are your areas of specialty?

K: I have seen clients with a variety of presenting issues, but I have several specialities in which I focus. One main area is dealing with trauma, abuse, and grief. I am also drawn to working with people who are dealing with self-esteem, relational issues, depression, and anxiety. I enjoy working with adults, adolescents, and couples.

M: At what office will you be seeing clients? Do you have weekend availability?

K: I will be seeing clients at the Winter Springs office, and I have Saturday availability!

M: What do you like to do for fun?

K: I love going for runs (especially in a beautiful place), getting lost in a good book, and spending time connecting with my friends and family. My husband and I both enjoy good food (whether we go out to a local restaurant or if he cooks) and relaxing on our chaise lounge while catching up on some of our favorite shows. Since having our little girl we do not go out much, but we do enjoy listening to live music and dancing when we get the chance.
