A Change of Course

by Erin Luginbuhl, M.A.

Three and a half years ago, I stepped out of the classroom as a teacher and into a journey of unknowns.  For a planner, this uncertainty was disarming, yet realizations in my last few weeks of teaching in China shed light on a future destination: the counseling room.

Unbeknownst to me, my time overseas began a process of discovery.  China gave me far more than I ever gave her. Experiences in the community, relationships with students and colleagues, and cultural differences stripped me of myself and, at times, radically showed me areas needing to be refined. My heart ached for people and children so foreign to me yet so familiar.  They opened my eyes to see what I needed to recover and pursue.

Key conversations with students showed me walking with people–as they wrestle with hurts, frustrations, discontent, joys, and every day battles of life–excites me. Seeing my students challenged, rise above their own expectations, become transformed is what made teaching rewarding.  But not just teaching–it’s what makes relationships with people energizing.

And through this, my foray into counseling began driven in part by these experiences and a hunger for the abundant life of which Jesus spoke.  As God works through the process of counseling, areas of our wounded hearts have an opportunity to be seen, restored, and brought to fullness of life.
